Got Sensitive Skin During Periods? Try These Tips to Prevent Irritation.

If you’ve ever felt itchy, raw, or irritated down there during your cycle, you’re not alone. Period-related skin irritation is more common than most people realize, and no, you don’t have to just live with it.

Here’s why it happens, how to spot it, and what you can do to keep your skin happy during your period.

First, why does skin irritation happen during your period?

There are a few common culprits:

  • Prolonged moisture from wearing the same pad too long

  • Friction between your skin and synthetic pad materials

  • Fragrances or chemicals in the pad itself

  • Heat and sweat, especially in warmer climates like the UAE

  • Hormonal shifts that make your skin more reactive

It’s not just about what’s on your pad, it’s also how your body responds that week. Some people are simply more sensitive during menstruation, especially in the intimate area where the skin is thinner and more absorbent.

How does irritation show up?

Skin irritation during your period often starts subtly, and can quickly turn into something really uncomfortable if ignored. It usually affects the vulva area, that’s the outer part of your intimate area where your pad touches your skin the most: the labia, the groin folds, and sometimes even the top of your inner thighs.

Here’s how it can show up:

  • Itching or burning that feels worse when you move, sit for long periods, or try to clean the area

  • Redness or swelling, especially along the edges where your pad sits and rubs

  • A rash-like texture - this can look like small pink bumps, a flat rash, or raw patches where the skin feels extra tender

  • Flaky or dry skin, especially if your skin is reacting to fragrance or the plastic top layer of a pad

  • In more intense cases, you might notice chafing, where the skin feels scraped, or even tiny splits in the skin folds from repeated friction

Even if it’s not painful, persistent itching or discomfort during your period shouldn’t be ignored. It means your current product or habits might need a gentle rethink.

Try these 7 tips to reduce irritation and treat your skin better

1.  Choose pads with natural, skin-friendly materials

Many commercial pads have plastic top sheets, synthetic dyes, or fragrances. These can cause irritation, even if you’re not normally sensitive.

Fizabelle Fix: Our pads use an organic cotton top sheet, because that’s the part that touches your skin, and a biodegradable core. No perfumes. No plastic-feel. Just comfort you can trust.

2.  Change pads frequently, even on light days please.

Irritation often comes from prolonged contact with moisture and heat. Even if your flow is light, wearing a pad too long traps sweat and bacteria.

Tip: Aim to change your pad every 4–6 hours, or sooner if you feel any dampness or discomfort.

3.  Avoid harsh soaps or scented intimate washes

The vagina is self-cleaning. Washing with harsh or fragranced products, even externally, can mess with your pH and worsen sensitivity.

Stick to plain warm water, or a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser for the outer area. No need to go overboard.

4. Opt for breathable cotton underwear

Synthetic fabrics trap heat and sweat, which can lead to rashes and fungal infections.

Try this: Wear soft cotton panties, especially on your heavier days, and avoid super-tight bottoms when you know your skin’s feeling tender.

5. Wipe before and after each pad change

Even if there’s no visible mess, wiping gently with a non-scented wipe or damp tissue helps reduce lingering bacteria and keeps the skin clean before applying a fresh pad.

Avoid wipes with alcohol or fragrance, they’ll only make things worse.

6.  Let your skin breathe (literally)

If you’re home, between pad changes, give your intimate area a few minutes of “air time.” Letting your skin breathe before putting on a fresh pad can reduce irritation and sweating.

Sounds awkward, but it helps. (And hey, you’re in your own space!)

7.  If irritation persists, consider a mild barrier cream

If you’re prone to chafing or rawness, applying a thin layer of barrier cream (like zinc oxide or a natural balm) can protect your skin, especially overnight.

Of course, if symptoms get worse or don’t improve, check in with a doctor. Better safe than sore.
